Challenge X

The next round of the Challenge X competition is coming up at the end of the month. It seemed timely to share this clip from a local Challenge X demo that Dr T and Pete Zogas attended earlier this year.
NI is a platinum sponsor of the competition and everyone was very excited last year when the Hybrid Electrical Vehicle Team at Virginia Tech took a top-to-bottom VI approach and then won the 2006 Hybrid Vehicle Challenge X Competition. They used several NI products including LabVIEW (of course), the LabVIEW Simulation Interface Toolkit, LabVIEW Real-Time and FPGA modules (my personal favorites) with Compact RIO for all their engine control.
How Challenge X Works
Seventeen teams are challenged to re-engineer a GM Equinox, to minimize energy consumption, emissions, and greenhouse gases while maintaining or exceeding the vehicle's utility and performance.
Year 1 focused on modeling, simulation, and testing of the vehicle powertrain and vehicle subsystems selected by each school. In June 2005, teams came together to undergo extensive judging and evaluation. Teams were scored for the following six reports:
Pre-Competition Hardware Evaluation
Oral Presentation
Live Simulation Event
Trade-Show Booth Event
Control Strategy Oral Presentation
K-12 Education Outreach Program
Years 2 and 3 require teams to develop and integrate their advanced powertrain and subsystems into a donated GM Equinox.
Participating teams are given extensive resources to help achieve their objectives, including substantial technical support and mentoring from GM and other sponsors (including NI).
Best wishes to all of the teams participating - your work is pushing us all in a better, greener direction!
